Google Tag Manager is a free tool that allows an individual to track the number of conversions on his/her website. A simple add-on (that adds tracking pixels to a mobile app or website) helps access the data. It serves as a bridge between web developers and marketers. Common tags required for PPC marketing such as Trusted Stores, Google Analytics, AddRoll, Marin and more can also be found.

How To Set Up Google Tag Manager (GTM)?

The success of the PPC campaign hinges on the proper tracking of conversions. The right data enables us to make informed decisions about ad copy, audiences, and keywords. Mo Mantra helps you with the process of setting up GTM.

Create – Google Tag Manager Account

Step 1 – Sign in using Google account password and email ID to the google tag manager website – https://tagmanager.google.com/#/home.

Step 2 – Click the Create Account button.

Step 3 – In this step (add a new account) account name should be the name of the website and then select the country.

Step 4 – Select the platform now (Web) for which to track the data.

Installation

Within a user account, the user needs to set up a container for his/her website. Usually, the domain name is given to the GTM container. Now click on the create button to start the account. Next, the account created will open the user interface. It has a unique container ID that must be implemented on the website.

The container code required can be found on the ID that starts with GTM or available in the admin section under the ‘install GTM’. Add the first code snippet in the website top portion (<head> of the Page) and the second snippet of code after it (<body>) in the opening tag.

To Check The Tag Installation:

To check whether the Google Tag Manager is installed correctly, we can install the Google Tag Assistant extension in Chrome.

Google tag assistant

To check if the Tags are properly working, we can install the Google Tag assistant. The Google Assistant helps in troubleshooting the installation of different Google Tags, including GTM, Google Analytics and more. Google tag assistant is a Chrome extension and can be installed from the link – https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tag-assistant-by-google/.

Installation GTM checking

Once the Google Tag Assistant is installed, navigate to any page that needs to be checked and click on the extension icon in the browser bar. There, Google Tag Manager will be listed along with other active tags (for Google products). Now check for the ‘smiley’ face icon that indicates the following:

  • Green smiley icon – It indicates functional code.
  • Blue smiley icon – It indicates potential issues (like the placement in the code’s non-standard section)
  • Red smiley icon – It indicates an installation error.

Checklist

  • Create Google account
  • Create a GTM account
  • Implement GTM Container code on the targeted website
  • Submit the container
  • Check the working of the container.
  • Install Google Tag assistant in a chrome extension to check the working of GTM code.

How Google Tag Manager Boost Conversions?

GTM enables the conversions in the following ways:

  • Enhances conversion tracking

GTM facilitates tracking events and also crucial actions. For example, GTM tracks call or clicks and present a picture of the visitor’s journey while collecting more data.

  • Simplifies troubleshooting

By setting up all basic conversion Tags in the GTM, troubleshooting is also simplified.

  • Time dealing with developers is reduced.

GTM reduces the time of communicating with web developers. The marketers can add HTML tags with ease without consulting the developers, thereby focusing more on marketing.

  • Allows advanced page-view tracking

A web page has multiple elements, such as:

  • URL
  • Buttons
  • Images
  • Text

The above elements can be set up as tags that can be used to track the visitor’s engagement. In the absence of a video trigger, it can help in determining the time spent by the visitor on the web page. More information about specific elements is also revealed.

  • Scroll tracking and User segments to identify barriers to conversions

Not many people scroll down till the end of a web page and stop in between. This can be figured out through scroll tracking. This feature of GTM helps identify where visitors stopped scrolling and the number of visitors actually converting. It enables us to figure out the interaction of the visitors with different segments of the web page. Thus, any potential barrier to conversion can be determined using GTM.

Conclusion

GTM enables to track the web traffic efficiently and help the marketers to optimize the space for revenue generation through PPC methodology.
